Cultivating Futures: FMFC Staff Host FARMS Advanced Students for Career Exploration Day
Recently, Fresno Madera Farm Credit was proud to welcome a group of FARMS Advanced students from the Center for Land-Based Learning to our office for a special Farm Credit field day. The event, held on April 11, gave students a behind-the-scenes look at careers in agricultural finance and the many opportunities available in the ag lending industry.
Getting to Know FMFC: Who We Are & What We Do
The day kicked off with a warm welcome and an introduction to Farm Credit and the mission of FMFC. Staff shared insights into how our organization supports the ag community through tailored financial services and how each department contributes to the success of our members.
Inside FMFC: Exploring Careers in Ag Finance
Students then engaged in a series of career presentations which highlighted different roles across the organization. They heard directly from:
• Bryce Urbanek – Credit
• Lillian Kier – Appraisal Trainee
• Dave Scheidt – Relationship Management
• Lauren Bruno – Marketing
These presentations offered a valuable glimpse into each career path and the day-to-day responsibilities of professionals in ag lending. Our staff also took time to answer thoughtful questions from the students, reflecting the students' deep interest in potential future careers in agriculture.
Workplace Readiness: Making a Strong First Impression
Students then heard from FMFC’s Senior Director of Human Resources, Amber Aikens who shared a presentation on professionalism in the workplace and tips for landing a job in today’s workforce. Aikens covered essential topics including professional dress, business etiquette, and interview best practices—equipping students with tools for success in any workplace.
Real-World Experience: Building Confidence Through Mock Interviews
The afternoon brought a unique opportunity for hands-on learning through mock interviews facilitated by FMFC staff. Students sat for a mock panel interview, gaining valuable experience in communication, self-presentation, and receiving constructive feedback.
Destinee Cortes, Central Valley FARMS Manager, who advises the students commented that the mock interview process was an invaluable experience for her students.
“The mock interviews were especially impactful—they provided an exceptional opportunity for the students to practice and strengthen skills that will be vital in their future endeavors,” Cortes said.
Closing Reflections: Learning, Feedback, and Growth
The day concluded with a recap session led by the interview panel. Students received personalized feedback on their performance and walked away with actionable tips to help them shine in future interviews. The energy and professionalism shown by the students left a strong impression on all of us.
